Shimla. India , 1994.

“From Delhi, by train, to Kalka,

on the Kalka mail.

A funny little walked-by-wallah

Sitting in a barrow with my luggage

To the Shimla bus stand.

Full sari wearing.

“Shimla, ex-British tourist resort.

Very odd, Exmouth-on-sea, but high in the Himalaya.

Mock Tudor style.

Large Tibetan population, tribal peoples

Mixing in a non-descript tourist lie.

Room expensive and dirty.

Mixed -up young Tibetan ‘dudes’ with no true ‘home’.

A longing for the higher places that loom all around.”
